Did You Use Tepezza and Experience Hearing Loss?

Posted on February 06, 2025 in Defective Drugs & Treatments

Rolling Meadows, IL personal injury lawyerFor those with Graves’ disease and hyperthyroidism, the 2020 release of a new product called Tepezza provided the first available treatment option for thyroid eye disease. Administered through eight separate intravenous infusions, the drug can reduce various symptoms associated with TED. However, early patients began to notice various hearing problems after using Tepezza.

If you have used Tepezza and subsequently experienced tinnitus or other forms of hearing impairment, you may be eligible for compensation through a defective medication claim. An experienced Rolling Meadows, IL product liability attorney can assess your eligibility and help you join hundreds of others seeking compensation.

What Is Thyroid Eye Disease?

Also called Graves’ ophthalmopathy, this autoimmune disorder can affect the patient’s eyes. Common TED symptoms include eyelid swelling and redness, dry or overly wet eyes, eye bulging, pain, and problems with closing the eyes. Although many patients experience only mild symptoms that improve on their own, others with more severe cases may require surgery or medication.

What Is Tepezza?

Tepezza, which is the brand name for teprotumumab, is the only FDA-approved medication specifically intended for people with TED. The medication’s approval was fast-tracked, which resulted in a quicker release. The drug was designed to treat TED causes, not only the symptoms. However, like many drugs, Tepezza has several common side effects.

Although current lists of side effects include hearing impairment, that was not always the case. Lawsuits allege that the earlier marketing and warnings did not sufficiently warn physicians and patients about the danger of hearing issues linked to Tepezza.

Initial assessments indicated that around 10 percent of Tepezza users experienced some form of hearing impairment, but new evidence has suggested that the number is as high as 80 percent.

What Kinds of Hearing Impairments Can Tepezza Users Face?

Users have reported many hearing-related problems after using Tepezza, including:

  • Ringing, popping, and clicking in the ears

  • Reduced ability to hear and particular difficulty in distinguishing words

  • Muffled sounds

  • Pain

  • Partial or permanent hearing loss

If you used Tepezza and have experienced these or other hearing-related problems since, call our office right away. We can determine your eligibility for damages and help you collect the evidence you need to support your claim.

What Damages Could Tepezza Users Collect?

If your claim is successful, the damages you could receive are based on your specific losses. Your economic damages may include medical treatment costs, lost income, and necessary medical devices like hearing aids. Hearing loss can also significantly impact your quality of life, and non-economic damages could address those losses, such as pain and suffering.
