Spotlight on Circumcision Errors and What Parents Can Do

Posted on December 13,2022 in Personal Injury

Palatine, IL circumcision error lawyerCircumcisions are commonly performed on babies. Having your son circumcised may be a personal decision that conforms to a religious ritual or perhaps it is for preventive health care purposes. Although the circumcision rates in the United States have declined, there are still complications that can arise.

Several cases were recently reviewed, shedding light on 47 problems that tend to surface from circumcision surgeries. As with any surgery, mistakes by medical professionals can cause serious problems. If your child has been injured as a result of a botched circumcision, you could be entitled to compensation.

Circumcision Complications

If you agree to have your child circumcised, you have every right to expect that the procedure is done according to acceptable medical standards. Mistakes during the procedure may be considered medical malpractice and could result in serious injuries to your child. The list of 47 complications involving male circumcisions included the following common errors:

  • Excessive skin removal – Removal of more skin than is necessary can result in excessive bleeding or improper healing, and fixing the mistake could alter the effects of puberty

  • Partial Amputation – The tip of the penis could be amputated, leading to disfigurement or the risk of the tissue dying

  • Burying the penis – This is when the penis becomes trapped in the pubic fat pad. More surgery is needed to fix this problem

  • Life-threatening sepsis and meningitis

  • Surgical trauma

  • Glans amputation

  • Necrotizing fasciitis, a rare bacterial infection that spreads in the body from the original source of infection

  • Hemorrhaging from the incision site

  • Major and minor infections of antibiotic-resistant bacteria that can be very difficult to treat

Depending on the circumstances of the injury, corrective surgeries may have to be done, leading to further expense and emotional stress on the part of both the parents and the child.

Parents Should Always Consent

Although most doctors would never do such a thing, there are cases in which doctors circumcise a child without a parent’s consent. This is unacceptable. Parents should always be involved in the decision-making process when it comes to their children. Before you agree to have your child circumcised, you as the parent should know who is performing the circumcision, the extent of their training, how clean their practice is, and their level of experience.
